The home of modern jiu-jitsu in San Mateo

At Sceptre our mission is simple: to provide a welcoming, ego-free environment where anyone regardless of age or fitness level can master the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Our gym utilizes a modern five-part curriculum paired with an interleaving study method and the Constraints-Led Approach (CLA). Every month focuses on a specific block of grappling, showing you how different positions relate to the "big picture." We don’t just show you moves; we teach the theory behind them so you understand the mechanics of grsppling. Instead of mindless repetition, we use specific live games to build real-world skills at a pace that matches your comfort level.

Q: Do I need to be in shape for BJJ?

While it certainly helps, you do not need to be super fit. Some classes will be harder than others phsyically but not every session is a grueling work out. You will sweat a good amount working your brain and body.

Q: What is your drop in fee?

You can pay for your drop in 1 of 3 ways. - You can buy a t shirt. - You can leave a google review if you enjoyed the hospitality - You can make a donation to Guardian Gym. There are QR codes at the front desk. If you are visiting for a week and will train multiple times, consider doing each item on the list.

Q: I have to leave a bit early for work, kid pick up etc, is it ok?

Yes, you can leave whenever you need to, don’t worry about it. You can quietly dip out of class for any reason.

Q: My child is 5 1/2, can they take the kids class?

Most likely yes! All kids are different - we have had kids as young as 4 on the mats. If they are out going and love moving around with friends they will probably enjoy it. You can also borrow a Gi and hop on the mats with them to help.

Q: Do I need to buy / wear one of your uniforms?

Nope, you can wear whatever gear you want as long as it is clean and effective for Jiu Jitsu

Q: Is there an intense physical warm up?

No - we believe once you step on the mat you should be breaking a sweat doing JIU JITSU, not running, calisthenics or push ups. Our warm ups typically consist of games two students play that pertain to that week's curriculum. At times coaches will use exercises or simple movements to help warm up for
